On Tuesday 10 February, we’re marking Safer Internet Day — a UK and global awareness day that encourages everyone to think about how we use the internet and how we can all stay safe, respectful, and in control online.
This year’s theme is “Smart tech, safe choices — Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI”. Safer Internet Day 2026 focuses on helping young people learn about how artificial intelligence (AI) is part of so many online tools and apps — from voice assistants and chatbots to content recommendations — and how we can use these tools in ways that are safe, positive, and responsible.
Why this theme matters
AI is all around us. You might:
Use smart assistants like Siri or Google Assistant
See recommended videos and posts on social media
Try AI tools to help with learning, art, or writing
These tools can be helpful, creative, and fun — but it’s important to understand that AI doesn’t always get things right and can sometimes create misleading, biased, or confusing content. Safer Internet Day invites you to think critically about how you interact with smart technology and how to make safe online choices.

Staying safe, thoughtful, and in control online
Here are some simple ways to make smart choices online:
Be curious about how apps and technology work
Check information from reliable sources before trusting it
Think twice before you share personal information
Use strong privacy settings and passwords
Take breaks from screens when you need to
Small habits like these help you feel more confident and in control online.
Being kind online
Safer Internet Day isn’t just about safety — it’s also about respect and kindness. How we speak to and about others online matters. Treating people fairly, blocking or reporting harmful behaviour, and supporting friends if something online worries them all help make the internet a more positive place for everyone.
Support available at college
If something online feels overwhelming, upsetting, or harmful, you’re not alone — support is available.
The College Wellbeing / Student Support Team is available during term time to listen, offer advice, and help you access further support if you need it.
If you’re not sure who to talk to, just ask — support is there to help.
Trusted external resources
Here are some reliable places to learn more or get help with online safety:
UK Safer Internet Centre – advice and resources on online safety
Childline – support for young people facing online issues
CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection) – reporting and safety help
These services offer information and support that can help you navigate digital life with confidence.
Final thought
The internet is an amazing resource — full of opportunity, connection, and creativity. Safer Internet Day is a reminder that with those benefits come responsibilities: to ourselves and to others. By thinking critically, making good choices, and supporting one another, we can help create a safer, kinder digital world.
